John G. Carlberg, 92, of Macomb, died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2024, at The Elms nursing home in Macomb.
He was born October 24, 1932, in Monmouth, IL, the son of Gilbert A. & Opal G. (Black) Carlberg. He was raised and attended school in Monmouth until the summer of 1946 when the family moved to Roseville. He attended his four years of high school graduating from Roseville High School in 1950. He married Sara L. (Lantz) Riggins, on August 11, 1972, in Macomb. She preceded him in death on December 30, 2005.
John is survived by his sister, Carol G. Carlberg of Roseville; sister-in-law, Linda Carlberg of Roseville; nephews, James G. (Abbey) Carlberg of Springfield, IL; Joseph L. (Janeen) Carlberg of Plainfield, IL; nieces, Gena M. (Larry) Reeves of Leawood, KS; Lisa Carlberg of Eden, UT; Jill D. (Michael) Hotchkin of Joliet, IL; and Jennifer J. (William) Slater, of Sandy, UT; great nephews and nieces, Joseph, Kai, Freya, Mathew, Alexandra (Calvin) Iverson, Joshua (Kelsee), Jillian (James) Glasgow, Claire, Sydney, Greta, Sophia, Layne, Josie, Bella, Beau, Lyla; great great nephews, Ian, Gavin, Bennett, McCoy, James; great great nieces, Iris and Johnny..
He is also survived by stepchildren, Jerry (Lynne) Riggins of Macomb, John (Barb) Riggins of Blue Springs, MO; Judy (Barry) Witten of Macomb; step-grandchildren, Andy (Holly) Riggins, Lisa (Steve) Hood, Carrie (Mike) Green, Emily (Brandon) Cousins, Tawny Matthews, Grant (Kristin) Riggins, Drew Riggins, Laura Gottwald, Anton J. (Claudia) Tonelli; step great grandchildren, Katie, Sarah, Masyn, Sydney, Rachel, Maddie, Charlie, Mackenzie, Jaxon, Landon, Ali, Keagan, Landen, Grace, Ronan, Elizbeth, Anna, and Peter.
In addition to his wife, John was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Eugene E. Carlberg, and James L. Carlberg; one nephew, John D. Carlberg; and one great nephew, James D. (Jake) Carlberg.
John enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving 1951 to 1954 when he returned home to Roseville and worked for Carlberg Heating and Air Conditioning. He later worked at Gale Products in Galesburg, and in 1970 went to work as an electrician at Western Illinois University, retiring in 1991. John played basketball in high school, played golf in later years, and followed college and professional sports. When he and his wife retired, they spent winters in Biloxi, MS. After her passing he spent several winters in Naples, FL He was a member of the American Legion for 69 years, first in Roseville, and later Macomb Post 6.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 21, 2024 at Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Macomb with Reverend Don Long officiating. Visitation will be held from 10 to11 a.m. Saturday, December 21, 2024 at the funeral home. Burial of ashes will be in Oakwood Cemetery with full military rites being conducted by the Macomb American Legion and Macomb VFW.
