1957-2024
Steven Louis Britton, 66, of Rushville, IL., went to his eternal home with his Lord and Savior at around 3:55 p.m. Friday, July 26, 2024 at the Rushville Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. He was surrounded by his family at the end of his long, courageous battle with cancer.
He was born September 21, 1957 at St. Francis Hospital in Macomb, IL., to Wendell Lowell and Naomi Kathleen Oliver Britton. He grew up in Blandinsville and attended Blandinsville Grade School. After attending Northwestern High School in Sciota for his freshman year, he moved to Spokane, WA., where he attended Central Valley High School before graduating from Boise High School in Boise, ID., in 1975.
After acquiring his Dietetic Assistant license from Spokane Community College, Steven worked in Food and Dietary Management at Deaconess Hospital in Spokane for many years before moving back to Illinois in 1988. After moving to Rushville in 1989, he first worked for Rogers Bakery before becoming a Food Service Director at Snyder-Vaughn-Haven Nursing Home in Rushville. In 2002, Steven joined the Rushville-Industry School District as an Assistant Food Service Director. Starting in 2021, Steven then worked for Country Gardens in Rushville as a Head Cook.
Steven’s greatest legacy is the immeasurable number of friends he leaves behind. No matter where he lived, he was well-loved by countless people including his family. His smile was compassionate and his laugh was contagious. Steven loved his family, his friends, and he loved living life to the fullest, and was always willing to help any friend or family member in need. Cooking was his main passion, but in recent years, he found another calling when he joined Pandora’s Playhouse in Rushville as an actor, director, and later on as a board member. Steven was a huge Cubs and Bears fan, but also loved attending Rushville-Industry games and events whenever he could. Besides cooking, his other hobbies included gardening, working with flowers, and spending time with his family and friends.
Steven is survived by his mother, Kathleen Barry of Macomb, one brother, Arlen Lee (Cynthia) Britton of Colchester, IL., one step-brother, Mike Barry of Macomb, one step-sister, Jan (Rick) Stoneking of Colchester, one nephew, MacCartney Wendell (Johanna) Britton of Colchester, and one great-nephew, Lennon MacCartney Britton of Colchester, IL. He is also survived by several aunts and one uncle along with numerous cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Wendell Britton, paternal grandparents, John Thomas and Mary Jane Britton, maternal grandparents, William Clarence and Nettie
Marie Oliver, step-father Rollie “Tom” Barry, and one step-sister, Lisa Malinak. Steven was also preceded by his beloved parrot of 39 years, Augie.
