Kewanee was back in action Saturday night as they traveled to Mackinaw for a non-conference matchup against the Deer Creek-Mackinaw Chiefs. The Boilers entered the contest at 11-12 overall after a tough loss Friday night.
From the opening tip the Boilers were in control of the game at both ends of the court. Kewanee used a full court trap to speed up the Chiefs and cause turnovers and quick shots from the host team. Kewanee’s quick start offensively was led by junior Brady Clark as he would score 8 first quarter points while assisting on two more baskets. Kewanee would close the quarter with a 14-6 advantage.
Quarter two was again controlled by the Boilermakers as they held the Chiefs to just 5 points. Clark again paced the Boiler scoring with 9 in the quarter and got some help from senior Jaiden Little with 4. Kewanee used solid passing and cutting off the ball to create easy opportunities for each other. The Boilers took a 32-11 advantage to the break.
Kewanee would continue it’s team play after the break as juniors Will Rumbold and Blaise Lewis led the charge in the scoring column. Rumbold scored 5 third quarter points which included a string and one basket. Lewis would tally 8 quarter points to help stretch the lead to 55-18 ensuring a mercy rule running clock in the fourth quarter.
The final quarter gave the Boilermakers a chance to rest their starters while five different players would score to help Kewanee close out a much needed 67-30 victory. Clark led the Boilers with a game high 21 points followed by Lewis with 13. Putting in a solid performance at both ends of the court was Rumbold who had 7 points and solid defense in the middle of the Boiler zone.
Ten Boilermakers would score on the night in total. Rounding out the scoring was Little with 6, juniors Blake Johnston and Cruz Paredes with 4 each, followed by senior James Campbell and junior Cristian Cazares with 3 apiece. Finishing up the scoring was junior Tre Amos and sophomore Davonte Jordan with a bucket each.
With the win Kewanee moves to 12-12 on the season and will finish the regular season with another four game home stand starting Tuesday night when Mendota visits Brockman Gym. Tuesday is scheduled to be a night of remembrance at Kewanee High School as they will honor former head coach Shaun Lewis with a pre-game ceremony. Game time is set for 7pm in Brockman Gym.
Kewanee’s sophomore team extended their win streak to 12 and 24-6 overall as they beat Dee-Mack 38-28. Kewanee was led by sophomore Kashen Ellerbrock with 25 points. Coach Dayton Ince has his team in line to win the TRAC East with two more conference opponents next week to close out the season.
