Leatherneck Men’s Soccer Earns League Academic Honors

The Western Illinois men’s soccer program was honored by the Summit League this week for their efforts in the classroom during the 2023-24 academic year.

The Leathernecks had five student-athletes named to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Achievement for the 2023-24 academic year.

Those student-athletes are Jimmy BaarsLiam GaineyGabe ChapaOscar Olingdahl, and Abdul Hypolite.

For a student-athlete to be selected to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence, the student-athlete must carry a 3.5 or better GPA, use a year of eligibility, and complete three full semesters (or five quarters) at the institution.

In addition to the five student-athletes named to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Achievement, the team had 16 student-athletes named to the conference’s 2023-24 Academic Honor Roll.

To qualify for the Academic Honor Roll, student-athletes must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average (GPA), on a 4.0 scale, for the year awarded. They must have used a season of competition (a year of athletic eligibility) in the sport in which he/she is nominated.

The men’s soccer team also earned the Team Academic Achievement Award, based on the percentage of list-eligible student-athletes on the Commissioner’s List.

The Western Illinois men’s soccer team moves out of the Summit League and into the Ohio Valley Conference this season. The Leathernecks open the year with an exhibition at Illinois-Chicago on August 10.
