Kewanee Basketball Finishes Geneseo Tourney with Win Over Host Team

The Kewanee Boilermakers closed out their Geneseo Thanksgiving Shootout Saturday night with a matchup ageist the host school Geneseo Maple Leafs. Kewanee was looking to close out the week with a third win after taking their first loss of the season earlier in the day to a tough Rockridge team.

The first quarter was a back and forth affair with both teams trading baskets. Geneseo would knock down three 3 point attempts to stay close at the end of the first quarter, with the Boilers holding a 16-15 lead. The Boilermakers were led by junior Brady Clark in the quarter with 6 points and sophomore Catrelle Reed off the bench with 5.

Quarter two would see the Boilers ramp up their defensive effort led by junior Blaise Lewis at the point of their zone to create deflections and steals which led to fast break baskets. Clark would be the beneficiary of the team effort on defense as a he would score the final 8 points of the half with some help of great passing from Lewis and Reed. Clark would end the half with a team high 17 to lead the Boilers into the break with a 33-18 lead.

Geneseo wouldn’t go away in the second half as they would continued to stay within striking distance as the game would stay around the double digit mark the entire second half. Kewanee would lose the second half 28-25 but it wasn’t enough to be threatened at the end as the Boilers would take the finale of the shootout 58-46.

The Boilers were led in scoring by All-Tournament player junior Brady Clark with 30 points. Sophomore Catrelle Reed continued his improved play with 10 points of the Boiler bench. Will Rumbold once again played a solid game at both ends of the court as he finished with 9 points. Rounding out the scoring was junior Blaise Lewis with 6 points, sophomore Davonte Jordan with 1 and Nolan Benecke with 1.

Kewanee will have their home opener on Tuesday, November 29 versus the Dixon Dukes. Sophomore and freshman games will start at 5:30 followed by the varsity matchup at 7PM.
