Boilermakers falls short on “Senior Night”
Kewanee welcomed the Orion Chargers to Brockman Gym Tuesday night in a non-conference matchup on “Senior Night”. Kewanee High celebrated over 40 graduating seniors from their winter sports teams and activities in front of another large crowd. The varsity boys basketball seniors playing their last regular season game for Kewanee were James Campbell, Jaiden Little and Clark Heeren. All three players gave four years to the Kewanee Boilermaker basketball program and their contributions have been appreciated.
Unfortunately for the seniors and the rest of the Boilermaker team the game did not turn out in their favor. The visiting Chargers played inspired basketball causing the Boilers struggles on the defensive end of the court. Orion did give Kewanee opportunities in the first half to attack their zone and man defenses as the Boilers would hold a 34-28 half time lead.
The lead was short lived in the second half as Orion continued to out rebound and out execute the home team in the third quarter as they would grab the lead at the end of the third at 46-45. Kewanee would briefly hold a three point lead with 5 minutes to play in the final quarter but some costly turnovers down the stretch and 6-7 foul shooting from Orion would be the difference. Orion would hold on for a 61-58 victory as Kewanee fell to 15-13 to end the regular season.
Kewanee was led in scoring by junior Brady Clark with 25 points followed by fellow junior Blaise Lewis with 14. Sophomore Catrelle Reed would connect for 3 three pointers for his 9 points while junior Will Rumbold would score all 6 of his points in the second half. Rounding out the scoring was a couple of seniors, Jaiden Little and James Campbell, with 2 points each.
The Boilermakers will begin regional play Saturday at 1pm inside Brockman Gym as they will host the IVC Grey Ghosts in a quarterfinal matchup. The winner of the game will travel to Bureau Valley High School on Wednesday night in a 7:30pm matchup against the number 4 seed Stillman Valley.
