Kewanee High vs Princeton High School

Tuesday; January 24

Game Time: 7:00PM

Location: Princeton High

Final Score:

Princeton – 66

Kewanee – 44

The Boilermakers traveled to Princeton Tuesday night to take on the number one team in 2A, the 22-0 Princeton Tigers, in a TRAC East matchup. Kewanee was coming off a win this past Friday versus Mendota to even their overall record at 9-9.

Kewanee would start slowly on the offensive end of things as they struggled to knock down the open shots as the Tigers size and strength made it difficult to get the ball in the paint. Princeton was led in the quarter by senior Grady Thompson who soon will be the school’s all-time leading scorer who had 8 first quarter points. The Boilers would counter with junior Brady Clark who entered the contest needing 43 points to eclipse the 1,000 point mark. Clark would drop in 6 points in the opening frame to keep the Boilers within striking distance at the end of one at 17-7.

Quarter two would see a more balanced attack from the Boilermakers as they would cut the lead to 27-23 with a little over a minute left in the half. Kewanee would use solid team defense to limit clean looks for Princeton, while using a patient approach offensively to battle back into the game. Kewanee would get contributions from three players in the quarter. Clark would tally 7 more second quarter points to end the half with 13. Sophomore Catrelle Reed used use his crafty ball handling to penetrate the Tiger defense to connect on three baskets, while junior Blaise Lewis knocked down a 3 pointer. Princeton would lead at the break 30-23.

The third quarter would prove to be the difference in the game as Princeton would use their height in the interior to dominate the offensive glass and extend their lead at the end of three to 53-30. The Boilers were led by Clark in the quarter with 5 points it wasn’t enough as the game slipped away from Kewanee.

The fourth quarter would see the Boilermakers out score Princeton 14-13. The Boilers shows showed some mental toughness in the final quarter as they kept battling the number one Tigers until the end. Clark would add 6 more to his game high 24 points, while junior’s Cristian Cazares and Cruz Paredes would provide a spark of the bench with 2 and 4 points.

Princeton would take the game 66-44 and set a school record for consecutive victories at 23. With the loss Kewanee drops to 9-10 and will look to bounce back versus Monmouth-Roseville Friday night in Brockman Gym. Friday nights game will mark the first home Friday game of the season as the Boilers have played 16 of their first 19 games away from home. Tip is set for approximately 7pm as it will follow the Riveters sophomore game as they look for their 20th win of the season led by Coach Dayton Ince. Game time for the sophomore contest is set for 5:30pm.
