Benet’s boys basketball team had an almost flawless summer, showcasing exceptional performance throughout June. The Redwings, blending experience with effective coaching, became a highlight of the month by winning 24 out of their 25 games, only falling short in their final match.
“Our kids played exceptionally well together, and they really seemed to enjoy each other’s company on the court,” said Benet coach Gene Heidkamp. “We have four returning players from last year, and their experience was evident. I’m pleased with the direction the team is taking.”
Despite the departure of standout junior Gabe Sularski, who transferred to Lemont in April after averaging 14.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game last season, the team remains optimistic for the 2024-25 season. Key players like Daniel Pauliukonis, Colin Stack, Jayden Wright, and Brayden Fagbemi have made the Redwings a formidable force.
Wright, who averaged 11.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.2 assists as a sophomore, expressed confidence in the team’s capabilities. “Adjusting wasn’t too challenging because we have a strong team. We might even be better than last year. With Daniel and Colin as our bigs and Jayden and Brayden as our guards, we’re solid,” Heidkamp added.
Heidkamp praised Pauliukonis for his performance in June, which earned him multiple Division I offers. “Daniel, a 6-9 forward, is becoming a key player for us. He’s more aggressive now and is really starting to tap into his potential,” Heidkamp said. “Colin, a 7-footer and cousin of Frank Kaminsky, has also made significant progress. Our guards, Jayden and Brayden, form one of the best combinations in the state. They’re both high-level players.”
Pauliukonis highlighted the team’s unselfishness and defensive prowess as crucial factors for their success. “Our strong showing in June was due to our teamwork and ball-sharing. We also excelled in defensive stops and transitions,” he said.
Wright reflected on the team’s collective effort and improvement. “Our team chemistry was a major factor. We played with determination, especially after how our last season ended. The group we have this year is fantastic, and our chemistry played a big role in our summer success,” he shared.
Looking ahead, Wright is focusing on enhancing every aspect of his game. “I’m working on improving each part of my game because I’m not yet the player I aspire to be. I have significant goals and I’m committed to getting better daily to help our team reach its full potential,” he said.
Fagbemi echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of team chemistry and individual improvement. “Our June success was largely due to our chemistry. We’ve been playing together since the seniors were sophomores and the juniors were freshmen, so we’ve had time to understand each other’s playstyles. I’m focusing on improving my shooting, ballhandling, and overall athleticism to compensate for any physical disadvantages,” he explained.
