ICC Seeks To Verify Death of Hamas Military Chief Deif, May Drop Charges
By The Media Line Staff
Prosecutors at the International Criminal Court (ICC) are investigating the reported death of Hamas military leader Mohammed Deif, according to legal filings made public on Tuesday. If confirmed, the ICC will withdraw its case against him.
Deif, 58, was a key figure in the October 7, 2023, assault on southern Israel and had been directing Hamas’s military operations in Gaza since. Israel claims Deif was killed in an airstrike on Khan Yunis on July 13, but Hamas has not confirmed this.
The ICC has already terminated proceedings against Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, who was reportedly assassinated in Iran on July 31. The ICC is still considering arrest warrants for several Israeli and Hamas leaders, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, for alleged war crimes.
Both Israel and Hamas have rejected the ICC’s move for arrest warrants, and there is no set deadline for the judges to make their decision.
