At the request of the Illinois Commerce Commission, Governor JB Pritzker proclaimed August 11, 2024, as 811 Day, a reminder for both excavators and homeowners to make a crucial call to 811 before starting any digging. This safety measure aims to prevent disruptions and damage to underground utilities. The Illinois Commerce Commission reinforces that contacting JULIE at 811 is not just a safety step but a legal requirement. This process helps to mark utility lines, significantly reducing the risk of potential hazards and avoiding legal penalties. State officials are urging compliance to ensure public safety and infrastructure integrity.

“Whether you are planting a sapling or undertaking a major construction project, homeowners and excavators are required by law to call JULIE at 811 to have utility lines marked before any digging starts,” said Illinois Commerce Commission Chairman Doug Scott. “Making the 811 calls before you dig protects you, your family and property from potential harm.”
