In Galesburg, the local Fire Department is actively collaborating with the National Fire Protection Association to champion the 2024 Fire Prevention Week campaign titled “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!” This campaign stresses the critical role of functional smoke alarms in enhancing safety and dramatically reducing the risks associated with home fires. Officials report that working smoke alarms can slash the chances of fatal fire incidents by over 50%. The Galesburg community is encouraged to participate in various scheduled educational sessions on the importance of smoke alarms, taking place across schools and residential buildings. Residents can check specific safety guidelines and event details by contacting the Galesburg Fire Department.

The Galesburg Fire Department encourages residents to support the 2024 Fire Prevention Week Campaign by checking the smoke alarms in their homes and replacing smoke alarms that are more than 10 years old.

“Working smoke alarms can make a life-saving difference in a home fire, giving people the time to get out safely,” said Fire Chief Hovind. “This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign is a great way to remind everyone about these messages and to act on them.”

GFD offers these key smoke alarm safety tips and guidelines:

  • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area (like a hallway), and on each level (including the basement) of the home.
  • Make sure smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
  • Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button.
  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.

GFD is hosting a series of events in Galesburg Schools, Knox County Housing Authority apartment complexes, and apartment buildings to support this year’s FPW campaign. To find out more about Fire Prevention Week programs in Galesburg, please contact the Galesburg Fire Department at 309-345-3756.
