In Kewanee, young voices are making waves in the Patriot’s Pen Essay Competition hosted by VFW Post 8078 and its Auxiliary. Eighth-grader Kaleigh Hampton from Wethersfield Jr. High School clinched first place for the second consecutive year, receiving a $75 reward for her essay on “My Voice in America’s Democracy?” Alongside Hampton, fellow students Sydney Paxton and Aryana Russell secured the second and third places, earning $50 and $25, respectively. Thirteen local students from Wethersfield and Neponset Schools participated, expressing their views on American democracy. Winners Hampton and Paxton now advance to the VFW District 8 level, carrying the hopes of their community with their insightful perspectives. This contest, engaging over 68,000 middle schoolers nationwide, highlights the importance of youth engagement in civic discussions.

There is a $5,000 grand prize at the national level for this yearly writing competition, which encourages students to explore American History, using their feelings and experiences in a 300- to 400-word essay.

“We had an excellent amount of involvement from the students, and there were some really inspiring essays written this year,” said Cindie Saey, Scholarship Chair. “Each year, we enjoy learning the mindsets of the youth of America and to see what is important to them. They are our future and it’s very refreshing to learn what is on their minds, how they feel, and how they think.”
