Galesburg Fire Department Investigating Early Morning Fire on Cherry Street

SHARE NOW

The Galesburg Fire Department tackled a fierce blaze at a vacant building on 175 N. Cherry Street early Thursday morning. The fire was reported at 3:18 AM and prompted a full response from all local stations, with 11 firefighters battling severe conditions. Due to the instability of the structure, firefighters were unable to gain access to the inside of the structure. An extra aerial ladder provided aid at the scene to help extinguish the fire. The freezing temperatures and strong winds made gaining control of the fire and stopping the fire from spreading a challenge. Efforts focused on preventing the fire from spreading to neighboring businesses, including Smokin’ Willies BBQ. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, though the building is considered a total loss, with damages estimated at $50,000. Investigations into the fire’s cause are ongoing, and authorities urge anyone with information to come forward.
