In an inspiring move towards inclusivity, Black Hawk College in Illinois has launched honor society chapters specifically for students with disabilities, becoming the state’s second community college to extend such membership. The newly chartered Delta Alpha Pi International Honor Society chapters, aimed at recognizing the academic achievements of these students, reflect a significant shift towards reducing stigma around disabilities. Students like Petra Petty and Leah Murphy express profound appreciation for the recognition, highlighting society’s role in educating and altering perceptions of disability. With requirements including a minimum GPA and an expressed interest in disability issues, the society fosters a supportive community for students overcoming diverse challenges. The Delta Alpha Pi International Honor Society was founded in 2004 to recognize high-achieving college students with disabilities. There are 235 chapters in the United States, with less than 30 of those chapters at community colleges.
“We are excited to have the opportunity to recognize our students with disabilities who have at times had to overcome the challenges of their disability and have continued excelling in their academic journey,” said Jen Holldorf, chapter advisor and coordinator of the Disability Resources & Access Office.
“As someone who has grown up living in a world not made for me, it’s an amazing feeling to see disabled people being included. It’s a privilege to be a part of something that embraces diversity.”

“I have struggled with learning and mental disabilities from a very young age, and I never thought I would ever make an honor roll,” said inductee Leah Murphy of Milan, IL. “I’m glad to be a part of Delta Alpha Pi where we can educate others about and reduce the stigma around mental and physical disabilities,” she said.
