In Kewanee, local high school senior and Life Scout Garrett Komnick is taking significant strides toward becoming an Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America. For his capstone Eagle Scout project, Garrett has organized a community-focused shoe drive to benefit students in the Kewanee School District. From December 26th to January 31st, he’s mobilizing the community to donate gently used or new shoes, specifically targeting the most needed youth sizes. Garrett said he worked with school counselors and determined the biggest need for shoe sizes is 6, 9, and 10 for girls and 8, 9, and 10 for boys. BNB Printing has already joined the cause, hosting a collection box, and more local businesses are expected to participate. Residents can contribute by contacting Garrett or his father, Mike Komnick, for pick-ups or drop-offs, further strengthening community support and engagement in this charitable initiative. Garrett said in a Facebook post, “Scouting has taught me so much and has created life long memories and friendships. Some of my favorite memories consist of camping at Hook and Bullet, visiting snow star, earning my brotherhood title in the Order of the Arrow, and finishing as the top archer at summer camp.”
