The Rock Island Police Department is cooperating with the Rock Island County Integrity Task Force (RICITF) to investigate a police-involved shooting. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon when an officer engaged a 22-year-old man, Jakarta A. Jackson, during a routine stop. Jackson, wanted on an outstanding warrant and initially fleeing on foot, returned to his vehicle, dragging the officer as he attempted to drive away. In response, the officer discharged his weapon, fatally wounding Jackson. Jackson was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. The officer sustained minor injuries. Investigations continue as authorities review body and in-car camera footage.
Once the investigation is complete, the case will be turned over to the Rock Island County State’s Attorney’s Office, who will make a final determination. If anyone has information about this incident and has not spoken with RICITF investigators, please call RICITF at 309-752-4915, extension 4935.
