The Henry County Office of Emergency Management reminds residents to be safe as an arctic airmass moves into the region Sunday through Tuesday. According to the National Weather Service, dangerous wind chills are expected after midnight tonight through Monday morning. Wind chills between -15 and -25 degrees may occur early Monday. Even colder wind chills are expected tomorrow night into Tuesday, with some wind chills near -35 degrees! Frostbite is a concern when temperatures drop below zero. If you must be outside, dress appropriately and limit exposure time outside. Don’t forget about your pets during this time, and limit their time outside. If you have outside animals, state statutes mandate that they must have proper shelter from the weather, food, and water.
Here are some safety tips from the Kewanee Police Department:
- Provide Warm Shelter: Pets should never be left outside in extreme cold for prolonged periods. Ensure they have a warm, insulated shelter to protect them from the elements.
- Fresh Food & Water: Make sure your pets have access to fresh, unfrozen water and sufficient food to maintain their health and energy levels.
- Know the Law: Both Illinois state law and Kewanee ordinances require that pets be provided with proper food, water, and shelter. Neglecting to do so may result in legal consequences.
