The Kewanee Chamber of Commerce Ambassador Club named Bill Breedlove the 2025 Outstanding Citizen. Known for his lifelong service, he continues his family’s legacy of community involvement. His efforts span from organizing youth sports programs to orchestrating significant community events. This accolade recognizes his relentless commitment to enhancing local life. The date and location of the recognition banquet will be announced at a later date.
Bill founded the Kewanee Duathlon and has served as co-director of the Hog Day Stampede for 30 years and the Kewanee Hardcore Run. His honors include being named a “Friend of Baseball” by the Kewanee Park District and serving on the Kewanee High School Athletic Hall of Fame board.
Celebrating a rich history in Kewanee, Breedlove’s Sporting Goods marks 75 years downtown. Central to this legacy is Bill Breedlove, who has been a key figure for over five decades. Not only has he run the family business, but he’s also deeply involved in community initiatives. Bill’s contributions span organizing youth sports programs and founding athletic events like the Kewanee Duathlon. Bill’s dedication reflects his unwavering commitment to community enrichment.
Ambassador Club member Dave Harker said “This year we are honoring Bill for his lifelong service to the community. The Breedlove name has long been associated with service in Kewanee and the surrounding area as he is a legacy recipient as his father Robert Breedlove was named Outstanding Citizen in 1996”
A legacy is being honored and advanced at Breedlove’s Sporting Goods. Cal, the son of Bill and LaJean, is embracing family tradition by managing the store’s online presence. This marks the third generation contributing to the family business. Bill, an alumnus of both Kewanee High School and Monmouth College, where he proudly played for the “Fighting Scots,” watches on with pride. Known for his fervor for Elvis Presley, Bill’s passions extend beyond sports goods. As his children, including Cal, Maddie, and Jack, embark on their unique journeys, the Breedlove legacy continues on strong foundations.
“Bill was a charter member of the Kewanee High School Athletic Hall of Fame and is on the board of that group presently. He was part of the Kewanee football stadium committee that has upgraded the facility to one of the finest in the area. He has been honored by Abilities Plus, Kewanee YMCA, Salvation Army the Illinois Athletic Directors Association, and many others for his service.”
