In Knox County, the Illinois Department of Transportation has announced a delay in construction work on the Interstate 74 bridges over the Spoon River. Due to beam deterioration, the start date of the project has been deferred, and operations are now scheduled to continue in April. The eastbound span will be removed and replaced, with traffic temporarily using the westbound span. Completion is expected by December. Motorists should expect delays, and alternate routes are recommended to minimize disruption. Attention to traffic changes and worker safety is crucial during this significant infrastructure upgrade, part of the $33.2 billion Rebuild Illinois initiative.
Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve more than 3,200 miles of highway and nearly 9 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Five of Rebuild Illinois include approximately $16 billion of improvements statewide on 6,541 miles of highway, 686 bridges, and 986 additional safety improvements.
