March 24, 2025, marks World TB Day, spotlighting the battle against tuberculosis. On this day, the Henry and Stark County Health Departments, alongside First Choice Healthcare, emphasize the significance of combating this global epidemic. Originating from Dr. Robert Koch’s groundbreaking discovery in 1882 of the TB-causing bacterium, the quest continues today with the theme “Yes, We Can End TB: Commit, Invest, Deliver.” This initiative underscores the dire need for increased investment and commitment to eradicate TB, which still impacts millions worldwide. Enhancing global efforts promises to save countless lives and hasten the epidemic’s end.
RaeAnn Tucker, Health Department Director of Health Promotion, said, “Too many people in our country and around the world still suffer from TB. Tuberculosis remains one of the world’s deadliest infectious killers. Each day, over 4100 people lose their lives to TB and close to 28,000 people fall ill with this preventable and curable disease. Global efforts to combat TB have saved an estimated 66 million lives since the year 2000. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has reversed years of progress made in the fight to end TB. For the first time in over a decade, TB deaths increased in 2020.”d 28,000 new cases, improving awareness and actions against TB remains essential. RaeAnn Tucker emphasizes the setback caused by COVID-19, noting that for the first time in a decade, TB deaths have risen. “Yes, We Can End TB: Commit, Invest, Deliver,” this year’s theme, calls for urgent global investment to save lives and ultimately end the epidemic.
