Grammy-winning trumpeter Dr. Stephen Hawk, originally from Ottawa, is set to deliver standout performances in two upcoming concerts at Illinois Valley Community College. Hawk joins the Jazz Ensemble on April 27, 2025, at 3 PM, followed by a special guest spot with the Wind Ensemble on May 1st at 7 PM. The community is invited to experience these unique events, with both concerts offering free admission. Hawk’s collaborations are expected to bring a dynamic energy and exceptional artistry to the college ensembles, marking a musical highlight for students and local music fans alike. Concertgoers can anticipate a blend of classic and contemporary repertoire across both evenings.
The April 27th concert ensemble is directed by Brandon Czubachowski. Jazz Ensemble selections include: “Johnny’s Theme” from the Johnny Carson Show; “Y Knot”; “Danza de los Rios”; “Piano Roll Blues;” “Blue Skies”; “Every Day I have the Blues”; “Swing Trumpeters Medley”; “My Funny Valentine”; “El Viento Caliente,” and “Friend Like Me.”
The May 1st concert also takes place in the Cultural Centre and is directed by Phil Whaley. Wind Ensemble selections include: “Overture for Wind”; “Concerto for Trumpet and Symphonic Band”; “Thunder and Lightning: Schnellpoke,” and “Lincolnshire Posy.” Hawk will be joined by fellow trumpet Wind Ensemble members John Armstrong and Brandon Czubachowski on “Bugler’s Holiday.”
Jazz trumpeter Dr. Stephen Hawk is returning home for a special visit to Illinois Valley Community College, the place where his musical journey began. Known for performing with jazz legends and contributing to two Grammy-winning albums with Nancy Wilson, Dr. Hawk credits IVCC for shaping his career. After a distinguished teaching career at Slippery Rock University and now at Texas State University, Hawk remains grateful for IVCC’s pivotal role. “The IVCC music program was paramount to my development,” he said. Dr. Hawk’s return promises inspiration for the next generation of musicians at his alma mater.
