Curt Johnson, a retired tool and die maker with a passion for antique firearms, is set to deliver a detailed presentation on the gunsmiths who shaped Illinois history. His program traces the journey from the French Colonial period, highlighting the skilled artisans who crafted firearms on Illinois soil. Johnson will also explore the era of early Illinois territory gunmakers before narrowing his focus to the craftsmen of Henry County and its neighbors, including Whiteside, Bureau, Stark, Knox, Mercer, and Rock Island counties. His research is compiled in a two-volume set, featuring over 1,500 early Illinois gunsmiths.
The event is sponsored by the Geneseo Foundation, the Bishop Hill Heritage Association, and the Galesburg Community Foundation.
