Farmers Harness Constructed Wetlands for Cleaner Water and Wildlife Support in Bureau and Marshall Counties

SHARE NOW

Farmers in Bureau and Marshall Counties are installing constructed wetlands to reduce fertilizer runoff and improve water quality. The Wetlands Initiative has led three projects, helping remove up to 52 percent of nitrate load from tile drainage while supporting local wildlife. These wetlands offer long-term environmental and financial benefits.

“We’re thinking long-term. We’re not improving productivity, but hopefully we are making the operation more profitable by taking some of that land that you’re sinking your money into and not getting a return and turning it into something that gives you a rental payment.”
