Galva Mayor Rich Volker provided key updates following Monday’s rescheduled city council meeting. Progress continues removing old lead water lines, with only 19 left to replace and two hydrants yet to be updated this year. Mayor Volker addressed growing safety concerns about electric bikes and scooters, emphasizing the need for parental awareness and adherence to existing sidewalk regulations. Residents are reminded that the city’s fall cleanup week runs September 24th through 27th, with item pickup scheduled for the 24th and drop-offs allowed at the maintenance building. Cemetery cleanup follows from October 20th to 24th, with removal deadlines highlighted for families.

The Galva Cemetery Board has scheduled the second clean-up for 2025 and issued a public reminder for all artificial and potted flowers, plants, shepherds’ hooks, and figurines to be removed by Sunday, October 19th. Military markers and solar lights are permitted to stay in place during this period. Organizers emphasized that no new items may be placed on graves until Saturday, October 25th. This cleanup ensures the cemetery’s upkeep and allows for safe maintenance. Residents are encouraged to retrieve personal tributes to prevent their disposal during the clean-up effort. Updates are available through the Galva Cemetery Board.

Galva is gearing up for its second cleanup week, running from September 24th through the 27th. Residents are invited to bring eligible items to the city’s maintenance yard, but they must show proof of residency upon arrival. For those needing extra help, special pickup assistance is available if scheduled in advance. Organizers are reminding participants that some materials—specifically shingles, yard waste, and hazardous materials—will not be accepted during the event. This initiative aims to help keep the community tidy and clutter-free as fall approaches. For full guidelines and scheduling information, residents should contact city offices.

Residents who are handicapped, elderly, or otherwise unable to bring items to the maintenance yard are encouraged to contact City Hall for assistance with scheduled pickups. To arrange for this service, call 309-932-2555 before September 24th. Remember, only one pickup per residence will be provided, and items must be placed on the curb on September 23rd—pickup teams will not enter backyards or other structures. Due to limited staff, this assistance is reserved for those who truly need help, and services will only be available on Wednesday, September 24th. Remember, unscheduled pickups will not be honored, so be sure to call ahead.

Eagle Enterprises will now accept televisions and electronic components for a fee during regular business hours. For questions about accepted items, call 932-2936. Additionally, the maintenance yard will extend its hours to assist with cleanup. On September 24th and 25th, hours are from 7 AM to 5 PM; on September 26th, from 7 AM to 3 PM; and on September 27th, from 7 AM to noon. City Hall staff are available to answer questions at 309-932-2555, from 8 AM to 4:30 PM. Don’t miss this opportunity for responsible disposal.
