OSF HealthCare is stepping up patient safety in its labor and delivery units by launching a state-of-the-art Virtual Labor and Delivery Monitoring Program across its network of birthing hospitals. This system layers AI-powered technology, PeriWatch Vigilance, and expert remote nurses over traditional bedside care. Through 24/7 centralized monitoring, nurses receive real-time, color-coded alerts for early detection of maternal or fetal complications, allowing for rapid intervention. The program is available at all OSF hospitals with birthing units and introduces no new costs for families. OSF aims to set a new standard of safety, integrating innovation into maternity care across its network.
Hospitals are increasingly relying on advanced electronic monitoring during labor and delivery to safeguard maternal and newborn health. Electronic fetal heart rate monitoring is a key tool for detecting early distress in babies, including issues like reduced oxygen or abnormal heart rhythms. For mothers, continuous observation of vital signs and labor progress helps catch complications such as high blood pressure, excessive bleeding, infection, or anesthesia reactions. Health professionals emphasize that real-time monitoring enables prompt intervention, significantly improving outcomes for both mother and child. Experts predict ongoing technological advancements will further enhance safety and care in delivery rooms nationwide.
“This program adds an extra layer of safety by providing 24/7 remote monitoring through our OSF OnCall team, who work hand-in-hand with bedside caregivers,” says Kate Johnson, manager of Digital Care-Women’s Services, OSF OnCall. “It does not replace our in-person care teams but gives them additional expert eyes on every laboring patient.”
This cutting-edge service, available at several OSF hospitals, including Saint Francis in Peoria, Saint Mary in Galesburg, and Saint Anthony in Rockford, leverages AI technology to support labor and delivery teams without requiring extra equipment or added costs for patients. By providing real-time monitoring and expert consultation, OSF HealthCare aims to boost safety and outcomes during childbirth. System officials say this innovative approach may be a first in the state, reflecting a strong commitment to maternity care excellence.
“Every mom and baby deserves the highest standard of care. This new technology ensures that we are watching over them even more closely, supporting our Mission to serve with the greatest care and love,” Johnson added.
