A major enhancement is coming to Lake Storey in Galesburg, where officials have announced plans to complete a fully paved recreation loop around the lake by 2027. The expanded multi-use path will encircle the lake, connecting popular sites like the soccer fields, campground, water park, and Carl Sandburg College. This project, made possible by two grants from the Illinois Department of Transportation, will proceed in two phases, with construction on the southern section beginning in 2026 and the northern connection finalized in 2027. City leaders say the loop will promote outdoor activities and improve community connections.

Construction on a new multi-use path around Lake Storey is moving forward, supported by two ITEP grants. Phase I, funded by $2 million from a 2021 grant, involves a 10-foot-wide path extension along S. Lake Storey Road, with work set to begin in 2026 following final IDOT approvals. A 2023 grant of $655,560 will fund Phase II, extending the path north to complete a full loop by 2027. Once finished, the expanded trail will connect recreational areas on both sides of the lake and provide safer walking and biking access for Carl Sandburg College students and residents.

“Walking paths improve the quality of life for our citizens and offer wonderful outdoor recreation, health, and wellness benefits,” said Aaron Gavin, Director of Public Works. “We are extremely grateful for the ITEP grants from IDOT, which have allowed us to move forward with this opportunity for our community.”

“We are excited to see this work take place to expand opportunities for citizens to enjoy the beautiful lake and quality of life in our community,” said City Manager Eric Hanson. “Having the full loop, with city recreational amenities on both sides and close proximity to the Carl Sandburg College campus and housing, offers positive synergy that will benefit the entire community for years to come.”
