The Henry County Humane Society Board of Directors has responded to online rumors concerning Lenny, a dog in their care for over a year at the Kewanee Animal Shelter. According to the board’s statement, claims that staff plan to euthanize Lenny are categorically false. The shelter affirms its ongoing efforts to find Lenny a suitable home but emphasizes the need for an experienced adopter, given Lenny’s behavioral challenges. He requires a home with no small children, cats, or small animals, and ongoing training is necessary. The shelter invites qualified adopters to apply for Lenny by calling 309-852-0040 and expresses gratitude to supporters.
“What a shame that false allegations can so easily spread with impunity and cause direct harm to our animal Shelter. This is brutal for the staff and volunteers who freely give their love, time and energy to make our Shelter an exceptional safe haven for homeless animals.”

Lenny’s disappearance from the shelter’s website sparked alarm on the Save A Heeler Facebook page, with advocates pointing to a limited number of adoptable pets currently listed online. The Save A Heeler Facebook post update said, “Now that this goodboy is receiving abundant interest (
), staff are unsurprisingly insisting they never intended to kill him, and he is reportedly no longer pending euthanasia. ”
There is no indication of where the euthanasia information originated.
According to the Save A Heeler post, “Staff reportedly intend to kill Lenny because he’s not receiving interest. Meanwhile, they removed him from their website (where only 2 dogs are listed), *and they do not have any of their pets listed on any of the common adoption websites (Petfinder, Adoptapet, 24petconnect, etc.). Their solution? Quietly kill him.
