Community members are invited to the Black History Month Extravaganza in Kewanee on Sunday, February 15, 2026. The event begins at 2 PM at the First Congregational Church and brings together residents, students, churches, and officials for a celebration of heritage and achievement. Area students from Central, Wethersfield, and Visitation schools have a special opportunity to celebrate Black History Month through an essay contest sponsored by the Kewanee Commission on Human Relations. Open to grades 4th to 6th and 7th to 8th, the competition will award $100 gift cards to first-place winners and $50 cards to runners-up in two age categories. Winning essays will be featured at the annual Community Black History Event, where the students will present their work. This initiative encourages young writers to explore and reflect on Black history, fostering both education and community pride. Entries are now being accepted from area schools.
