Six people—two adults and four juveniles—were detained Tuesday morning after a violent spree involving a stolen car in Peoria, which began around 6 AM. According to Chief Eric Echevarria, the group targeted students near Peoria High School and Richwoods High School, driving recklessly and attempting to run over individuals. They attacked a student, who needed hospital care, and hurled objects at police and motorists. A police pursuit ended when officers disabled the vehicle with spike strips. Fortunately, no one suffered life-threatening injuries. The Peoria Police Chief is calling for reforms in the juvenile justice system and greater parental responsibility, emphasizing accountability for public safety.

Chief Eric P. Echevarria said, “These individuals terrorized parts of our city. They stopped near Peoria High School, masked themselves, and violently attacked a student who was walking to school, and who later required hospital treatment. They then drove recklessly toward students at both Peoria High School and Richwoods High School, targeting and attempting to run individuals over.”

Chief Echevarria added, “Their actions demonstrated a blatant and dangerous disregard for human life.” “We are extremely fortunate that no one was seriously injured or killed today.”

Peoria’s top law enforcement officer has voiced strong concerns about repeat violent offenders after a recent incident involving juveniles, some with prior criminal records. Chief Eric Echevarria says police officers are working courageously and proactively, but limited consequences for offenders undermine public safety and shift the burden onto victims. He highlighted the need for genuine juvenile justice reform, emphasizing accountability, meaningful intervention, and greater parental responsibility. Incidents such as juveniles committing crimes in stolen vehicles at dawn, Echevarria says, point to failures beyond policing—specifically in parenting. The police department pledges to continue protecting the community. The investigation remains ongoing.

“Peoria deserves safety, and we remain unwavering in our commitment to protect it.”
