Kewanee School District Showcases Innovative Agriculture Program at State Conference

Kewanee Community Unit School District #229 is in the spotlight as Superintendent Rebecca Baney and KHS Academic Advisor Heather Olalde shared their expertise at the Cultivating Connections in Ag conference. Presenting “Leveraging Assets to Build a Complete Agriculture Program: A Superintendent’s Perspective,” they detailed KCUSD 229’s innovative efforts to enhance and support its Agriculture Program. Their session emphasized collaboration, resource development, and long-term planning as key strategies. District leaders say these initiatives aim to provide students with expanded learning opportunities in agriculture, preparing them for future success in a vital local industry.

Kewanee Community Unit School District 229 continues to set a strong example in agricultural education. Superintendent Rebecca Baney highlighted the district’s four-step approach to growing its agriculture program, focusing on board priorities, assessing and leveraging district assets, and ongoing evaluation. The session demonstrated how strategic planning, responsible budgeting, and partnerships with industry and alumni can yield meaningful opportunities for students. Kewanee High School FFA members shared their achievements, showcasing the impact of hands-on learning. Baney emphasized that such progress is rooted in aligning the district’s mission, cultivating talent, and working closely with the community to prepare graduates for successful futures.

“Our Agriculture Program reflects what is possible when we align mission, human capital, and community support,” Baney said. “This work embodies our commitment to Inspire the Mind and Honor the Heart.”

Attendees explored how aligning with the district’s mission and fostering strong connections with industry and alumni can create valuable opportunities for students. Members of the KHS FFA chapter showcased their achievements, sharing key moments from their program of activities. District officials reaffirmed their commitment to expanding agriculture education and College and Career Pathways, focusing on preparing graduates for success in higher education, careers, and community leadership roles. KCUSD 229 pledges continued support for student development and innovation.
