Why You Should Never Leave Animals at Shelters After Hours

An urgent reminder for the community: abandoning animals outside shelters when they’re closed can have tragic consequences. At the Kewanee Animal Shelter last weekend, a baby kitten with visible injuries was left in a basket by a side door. Fortunately, the staff discovered the kitten before nightfall. The next day, a stray cat, later identified as the kitten’s mother and only six pounds herself, approached a volunteer. That same night, three more kittens were found behind a dumpster—sadly, two had not survived. The shelter urges everyone to wait until open hours to surrender pets, ensuring every animal’s safety and well-being.

The Henry County Humane Society in Kewanee is open seven days a week from 8 to 11 AM and 4 to 6 PM. If you have questions or concerns or want to donate, you can call the Kewanee Animal Shelter at 309-852-0040 or drop off or mail a donation to 197 Fischer Avenue, Kewanee, IL 61443.
