The Kewanee Chamber of Commerce Ambassador Club has announced William “Willie” Burford as the 2026 Outstanding Citizen. Burford is being honored for his longstanding contributions to the Kewanee community, both as a dedicated staff member at Rux Funeral Home and as an active participant in a variety of civic organizations and local events. Colleagues and residents alike praise Burford for his compassion, leadership, and consistent efforts to improve community life. The Chamber highlighted his impact and dedication, making him a deserving recipient of this distinguished recognition for service and commitment to the Kewanee area.

Ambassador Club member Dave Harker said, “This year we are honoring Willie for his service to the community. Willie has long been associated with service in Kewanee and the surrounding area with his employment at Rux Funeral Home.”

Willie, born and raised in Galesburg, graduated from Galesburg High School in 1995 before earning top honors in Mortuary Science at Southern Illinois University. His early career began at G. Meredith Funeral Home in Carbondale. In 2002, he made Kewanee his home and joined the team at Rux Funeral Homes, where he continues to work. Willie is the proud father of three children—Maddie, Makenna, and Braley. His family also includes a daughter and son-in-law, Bridget and Drayson Owens, along with their children, and a son and daughter-in-law, Cameron and Pamela Wirth, and their children.

Community leader Willie continues to make a significant impact in Kewanee through his extensive service. As a 23-year Kiwanis Club member, he has served twice as president and also as Lt. Governor. He’s recognized as both a Walter Zeller Fellow and a Dr. Luis V. Amador recipient. Willie advises the Wethersfield Key Club and, alongside Everett Whitcher, chairs the annual Kiwanis Pancake Day—now for 13 years. His involvement extends to the National Funeral Directors Association, Kewanee Elks Lodge, and as an emcee for Chamber events like the Hog Days parade, further highlighting his dedication to the local community.

When he’s not working, he can often be found cheering on his son at college baseball games or enjoying outdoor adventures with his family. His love for athletics doesn’t stop there—he’s also a devoted Detroit Lions supporter, standing by the team in both triumph and defeat. Friends and family describe him as a true fan who brings energy and enthusiasm to every game he attends. Whether on the field or in the stands, his unwavering spirit is a sterling example of dedication and community.
