Danielle Tansel Returns to Lead Galesburg Aquatics and Expand Community Swim Programs

Danielle Tansel has been named Recreation Supervisor for Galesburg’s Parks & Recreation Department, bringing decades of expertise to her hometown’s aquatic programs. A Galesburg native and record-holding swimmer, Tansel’s athletic journey began at local pools and continued with championships at Notre Dame. Her extensive collegiate coaching background includes leadership roles at top universities across the country. Tansel’s vision for Galesburg includes expanding swim instruction, competitive opportunities, and community-focused programming at the city’s improved facilities, Hawthorne Municipal Pool and Lakeside Water Park. She officially joins the team on April 13, 2026, aiming to create accessible experiences for all.

“We are thrilled to welcome Danielle back to Galesburg to lead aquatics for the City of Galesburg,” said City Manager Eric Hanson. “Her outstanding athletic background and collegiate coaching experience uniquely position her to enhance our aquatic offerings. I am confident that her vision will drive the growth of our programs and ensure our facilities serve as an accessible cornerstone of community health and recreation.”

Tansel’s lifelong dedication to swimming began in the pools of Galesburg, rising from childhood lessons at Hawthorne Pool to record-breaking performances at Galesburg High School. Tansel’s journey from local swimmer to renowned coach highlights her lasting ties to the Galesburg community. After learning to swim at Hawthorne Pool and competing on her first team at Lakeside, she broke records at Galesburg High and later swam at Notre Dame, helping her team secure four consecutive Big East Conference titles. Armed with a degree in Anthropology and a master’s in Counseling, Tansel’s coaching career has taken her to universities across the Midwest and beyond, including Michigan and Ohio State.

“Coming from where I started, I’ve always carried my upbringing with me—it shaped my grit, my purpose, and my belief in what’s possible,” said Tansel. “Now, returning home for a role that both excites and challenges me, I’m driven to elevate competitive swim, expand innovative programming, and make aquatics accessible to every corner of our community. This is more than a position—it’s a chance to grow the reach of our city and create opportunities for all.”
