The historic Woodland Palace near Kewanee is set for much-needed repairs, as the Friends of Woodland Palace (FOWP) have signed a contract with Oldeen Roofing Company. “First, the roof structure will be rebuilt to make the building water-tight once again. Selecting a contractor that would have the best interests of the project was extremely important to FOWP. A third-generation Kewanee company, Oldeen Roofing, fits that requirement” stated Ray Jacobs, FOWP President. The restoration effort aims to educate the public about Fred Francis’s remarkable, innovative home, which he left to the city in 1926.
Restoration efforts are underway at Woodland Palace, the historic home of inventor Fred Francis, located just three miles east of Kewanee. Volunteers with Friends of Woodland Palace, a group formed in 2025, are collaborating with city officials and historical architect David Leonatti to return this engineering gem to its original splendor. Fundraising campaigns continue as the team works toward opening sections of the house for the July 4th celebration at Francis Park. Some areas may remain under construction during the event.
The house, built by Fred Francis—an inventive mind known for innovations well ahead of his era—has stood as a local landmark since it was left to the city in 1926. The organization invites individuals and businesses to support ongoing renovation efforts. Donations can be sent to the Kewanee Chamber of Commerce at 113 E. 2nd Street or arranged by contacting Sherry “TD” Welch at [email protected]. Please make checks payable to the Kewanee Preservation Society and mark your donation “Woodland Palace.” Updates and more information are available at woodland-palace.com and on Facebook.
After more than 100 years, the iconic home now faces urgent preservation challenges, with active water damage threatening its architectural details and original artistry. A fundraising campaign seeks $400,000 to replace the aging roof, repair the unique glass solarium, and conserve historic walls and furnishings. Plans also include establishing a permanent fund for ongoing care. Organizers urge the public to help protect this unique landmark, ensuring Woodland Palace continues to inspire for generations to come.
