Kealey Rick, a student from Ottawa attending Illinois Valley Community College, has been recognized as a Golden Apple Scholar. Competition for state scholarships remains intense, with 3,000 applications submitted annually. The competitive honor offers tuition help and specialized training for future educators dedicated to teaching in under-resourced or high-need schools. Rick, who plans to pursue elementary education at Illinois State University, will benefit from both financial support and professional development throughout her studies. The Golden Apple Scholars program aims to address teacher shortages in challenging school environments by nurturing talented students like Rick who are committed to making a difference in education.

In return, Rick will dedicate five years to teaching in at-risk schools. Rick, who excelled in academics and athletics and as a preschool assistant, credits her mother and a favorite teacher for inspiration. “I want to be one of those teachers who loves being in a classroom,” she said. She says overcoming her own learning challenges drives her passion for special education. Rick’s instructors praise her unwavering dedication and predict she’ll make a lasting impact in the classroom.

Instructor Jill Urban-Bollis, whose excitement equaled Rick’s. “I could not be prouder of Kealey. She is a good example of what dedication and hard work looks like. She has her eyes on the prize and when she gets there, I anticipate she will be one of those educators that truly makes a difference!” Urban-Bollis said.
