The Kewanee Fire Department is entering a new chapter, as Chief Stephen Welgat retires at the end of May after 27 years of service, passing leadership to Jacob Forney. Recent promotions have strengthened the team, with Joe Rediger advancing to Captain, Andrew Welgat to Lieutenant and Fire Training Officer, and Shawn Frank to Engineer. New faces are joining as well, including Allen Lane, while Miller Janzen is set to graduate from the Peoria Fire Academy. Two grants totaling over $366,000 will support future operations. With the retirement of Chief Welgat, the Kewanee Fire Department anticipates welcoming a new team member later this year. Recent collaboration with Blackhawk Welding Center has resulted in upgraded training burn cans and ladder truck repairs, ensuring improved safety and preparedness. The department recently responded to a major fire at the Cernovich scrapyard, where support from the Cernovich family and City Manager Kasey Mitchell made a significant difference. About 80 responders from multiple agencies worked together to manage the scene effectively. Later today, fire and police personnel will engage with Central School’s fourth graders in a friendly dodgeball match, strengthening community ties.

Jacob Forney said in a memo, “As many of you are aware, we recently responded to a large fire at the Cernovich scrapyard. I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to everyone who assisted us; without their help, the outcome could have been far worse. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the incredible generosity of the Cernovich family during such a difficult event. I want to personally thank them for providing food and opening their buildings to responders. We are also grateful to Kasey Mitchell, who was generous enough to provide additional food and drinks. In total, we had approximately 80 responders from seven fire departments, two police departments, the Office of Emergency Management, Ameren, and Kewanee Public Works. Their collective efforts were instrumental in managing the incident. Later today, Friday, May 8th, members of the Kewanee Fire and Police Departments will visit Central School to face off against the 4th graders in a dodgeball game. This is a fantastic opportunity for both departments to engage with the community and show that we are more than just the people who show up when you call 911. Public relations events like this are a great opportunity for us. As I move into this new role, my priority remains the safety of our residents and the professional development of our personnel. I look forward to working closely with the Council to ensure the Kewanee Fire Department continues to operate with the highest level of efficiency and transparency. Thank you for your continued support and for the opportunity to lead this department.”
