A suspect and a male juvenile were shot by police during a domestic battery standoff in rural Depue

A tense standoff unfolded in rural Depue during the early hours of May 10th. Around 2:40 AM, the Bureau County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported domestic disturbance involving an armed individual barricaded with hostages.

Sheriff James Reed stated, “The subject involved was reported to be armed with a knife and barricaded himself in a room with multiple hostages.” The Bureau County Sheriff’s Deputies, Depue Police, Ladd Police, Princeton Police, and Illinois State Police troopers responded to the emergency call.

Multiple attempts were made to negotiate the safe release of those held inside, but officers decided to enter after hearing screams and determining the family was in imminent danger. During entry, shots were fired by police, resulting in both the suspect and a juvenile being struck.

According to the release by the Bureau County Sheriff’s Office, “The juvenile was transported by the Illinois State Police and Bureau County Sheriff’s Deputies to a local hospital for emergency medical treatment where he was later pronounced deceased.”

An adult male has been transported to a nearby hospital by 10/33 EMS for emergency care following the incident. Authorities have filed criminal charges against the suspect, including Aggravated Unlawful Restraint, Aggravated Assault, and Domestic Battery. The suspect is also receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained. The Bureau County Sheriff’s Office reports the investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be considered as the case develops.

Illinois State Police and the Bureau County Coroner’s Office continue to assist in the investigation. At present, no further details have been released as officials work to gather more information.
