Kewanee Police Clarify Reports on Skeletal Remains

A correction to earlier reports regarding the discovery of skeletal remains in Northeast Park: Deputy Chief Mike Minx clarified that the remains are suspected to be human but have not been confirmed as such. Official confirmation will come only after the Kewanee Police Department receives autopsy results and further evaluation by a paleontologist. Any statements declaring the remains as definitively human are inaccurate. The investigation is ongoing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available. The Kewanee Police Department urges patience as specialists review the evidence. An autopsy was conducted on Friday morning at the Peoria County Coroner’s Office.

An unsettling discovery has prompted an investigation in Kewanee, where workers emptying a restroom waste tank at Northeast Park found skeletal remains, including what “appeared to be a human skull.” Police were called to the scene shortly after 3 PM on May 27th. The Kewanee Police Department, Henry County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois State Police, and the county coroner are collaborating to determine if the remains are human and to identify the individual. Northeast Park is closed during the investigation, and officials are urging the public to avoid the area. Authorities say there is currently no known threat to public safety.
