Community shows up to support new emergency Freedom House shelter in Kewanee
A ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 15, 2026, marks the opening of the new Freedom House emergency shelter in Kewanee, offering support for individuals and families seeking safety, stability, and a path toward healing. The shelter will serve residents across Bureau, Henry, Marshall, Stark, and Putnam counties in Illinois, expanding access to critical services for those in crisis. Organizers say the goal is to provide a safe place for people who need immediate help, along with resources to begin rebuilding their lives. The facility, located at 716 Elliott Street, was created from a former OSF HealthCare medical office building donated to Freedom House in 2024. It features private family spaces, children’s play areas, communal living and dining rooms, and enhanced security measures. Freedom House says the project represents one of the largest investments in victim services in north-central Illinois in decades. Over $2.1 million of the $2.5 million goal was raised by donors and supporters, allowing Freedom House to create a secure, safe, and calming environment for domestic and sexual violence victims.
Freedom House continues to provide free, confidential support for survivors of domestic and sexual violence across Bureau, Henry, Marshall, Putnam, and Stark counties, with no residency requirement for services. The agency operates shelters in Princeton and Kewanee, along with counseling and advocacy offices in Geneseo, Cambridge, Kewanee, and Lacon. Services include a 24/7 hotline, emergency shelter, legal and medical advocacy, psychotherapy for adults, teens, and children, substance-use recovery support, prevention education, and professional training.
