Chevron Renewable Energy Group says it’s shutting down two Midwestern biodiesel plants indefinitely.

In a press release, company officials cited poor market conditions resulting from weak biodiesel volumes under the federal Renewable Fuel Standard. The impacted sites are located in Ralston, Iowa and Madison, Wisconsin.

Grant Kimberley, executive director of the Iowa Biodiesel Board, stated the industry “warned EPA about the possibility of plant closures when it set RFS volume obligations well below our overall capacity.”

Kimberley said IBB has not heard of plans for any other plant closures in the state.
