An incident last week in Galesburg involving a potential explosive device in a residential garage highlights a need for tips on what to do if you find a possible explosive device, such as an old mortar or grenade.  On January 4, 2024, a Galesburg resident found a mortar while cleaning out the garage of a relative.  The resident brought the mortar to the Galesburg Public Safety Building lobby for police to safely dispose of it.  The mortar was removed from the building and placed on the grass outside of the building and employees were evacuated from the immediate area.  A perimeter was set up around the order and the Peoria Bomb Squad was called.  The bomb squad found no explosive material in the device and the bomb squad removed the device for proper disposal.  The older the munition, the more fragile it is.  So, we reached out to Deputy Chief Michael Minx of the Kewanee Police Department on how what to do if you find a possible explosive device.  Deputy Chief Minx said the incident in Galesburg is a critical reminder of the importance of public safety when it comes to handling potential explosive devices found in residential areas.

First and foremost, if anyone discovers what appears to be a mortar or any other explosive device, it is crucial to avoid handling it. These devices can be highly unstable, especially if they are old or have been stored improperly.

Here are some safety tips to follow:
Do Not Touch or Move the Object: The first rule with any suspected explosive device is not to touch or move it. Old explosives can be sensitive to movement or even slight disturbances.
Evacuate the Area: Ensure that everyone in the vicinity is moved to a safe distance away from the potential hazard. This minimizes the risk of injury in case the device is disturbed accidentally.
Contact Police/Fire: Immediately call us at 309-853-1911. The call will be answered by our dispatch who will then send Kewanee Officers and Kewanee Firefighters to the location. We have the expertise and resources to safely assess and handle the device.
Provide Clear Information: When you call the Kewanee Dispatch, give them as much information as possible about the device and its location. This will help us to prepare appropriately before we arrive.
Prevent Others from Accessing the Area: If possible, set up a temporary barrier or mark the area clearly to prevent others from entering until the authorities arrive.
Stay Informed and Follow Instructions: Once Kewanee Police and Fire Departments are on the scene, we will assess the situation and provide further instructions. It’s important to follow our guidance for your safety and the safety of others.
