In a recent incident in Galesburg, a routine police stop turned hazardous when a gold minivan collided with a squad car during a traffic stop for a bicyclist without a light, around 9 PM on November 12, 2024. The collision occurred near Ella St. and Lincoln St. The minivan driver, later identified as 27-year-old Cody A. Sibley, attempted to flee the scene but subsequently crashed into a utility pole near the intersection of Berrien Street and Churchill Avenue. Sibley, whose blood alcohol level was found to be 0.198%, faces multiple charges, including DUI and reckless driving. This event underscores the dangers of intoxicated driving and the importance of law enforcement in maintaining public safety.
Cody Shibley was transported to the Knox County Jail and booked for Driving under the Influence of Alcohol, Reckless Driving, Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding, Operation of a Vehicle with Suspended Registration, Possession of Open Cannabis in a Vehicle, and Numerous other traffic charges. He was later released.
Chief Russell Idle said, “intoxicated drivers pose a significant threat to the safety of our residents and our officers are committed to identifying those drivers and taking them into custody.”
The Knox County Sheriff’s Office is conducting the crash investigation. All subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
