Edible wheels will spin once again at Illinois Valley Community College as the Edible Car Contest celebrates its 20th anniversary. On February 25th, the IVCC gym will transform into a racetrack filled with cars created from snacks and sweets, with competitors racing for medals in categories such as fastest, sweetest, and most creative. Vehicles crafted from everything from cheese and tortillas to Rice Krispies and donuts, all meeting strict “edible only” rules, are judged for design and performance. Sponsored by IVCC’s MIMIC project and Workforce Development Division, the contest highlights science and engineering during National Engineering Week. Register here. For event-related questions, contact Kara Kozlowski Eisert by phone at 815-224-0358 or by email at [email protected].
Registration opens at 10 AM, followed by judging at 10:30 AM, and the main event at noon. Students, staff, and area schools will engineer edible vehicles for a chance to win medals in categories like fastest, sweetest, and most creative. Past entries have featured salami, Twinkies, Rice Krispies, tortillas, and more, with each car boasting at least three wheels, two axles, and sometimes even marshmallow Peep drivers.
