The Kewanee Police Department is stepping up patrols as part of a statewide safe driving campaign during the Labor Day period. Joining more than 200 agencies across Illinois, officers will be on the lookout for impaired, distracted, and unsafe drivers, as well as enforcing seat belt laws. The department emphasizes that these increased efforts are designed to reduce crashes and protect lives during one of the busiest travel times of the year. Motorists are urged to stay alert, avoid distractions, and always wear seat belts. The campaign highlights the importance of making safety a top priority on the roads.

“Whether it involves alcohol, cannabis, or any other impairing drug, driving under the influence is illegal and puts lives at risk,” said Chief Stephen Kianowski. “We’ll be patrolling with zero tolerance for impaired driving, because our goal is to protect the residents and visitors of Kewanee.”

This local enforcement is aligned with the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” campaigns, led by the Illinois Department of Transportation. Supported by federal highway safety funds, these efforts are reinforced by a media campaign, reminding everyone of the serious risks that come with unsafe driving behaviors.

“We want everyone in our community to celebrate the holiday weekend in a safe and responsible way.” said Chief Kijanowski. “Plan ahead, choose a designated driver, and avoid driving while impaired—decisions like these save lives.”
