8 Year Drivers License Given Committee Approval

SHARE NOW

State Representative Ryan Spain (R-Peoria) is sponsoring legislation in the Illinois House which will reward the state’s safe drives with the opportunity to stretch out their trips to the DMV to renew their licenses.

SB275provides that beginning no later than July 1st, 2027, the Secretary of State shall offer, to qualified applicants, the option to be issued an 8-year driver’s license.

Around the country the average length of a driver’s license is currently 5 and a half years. 38 states currently have longer terms than Illinois.

The bill was given unanimous approval in the House Transportation Committee and now heads to the full House for consideration.   The bill also passed in the Senate on a unanimous vote.
