Bicyclist Injured After Being Struck By Vehicle

On Thursday, February 2nd, at approximately 6:02pm the Sterling Police Department was dispatched to a car versus bicycle accident at the intersection of 1st Avenue and Wallace Street. 

Investigation revealed that a bicycle ridden by Roddy L. Tedder, 40, of Sterling, was traveling northbound on the sidewalk of the 1st Avenue Bridge. Tedder and the bicycle left the sidewalk area and traveled into the eastern lane for northbound traffic of 1st Avenue directly into the path of a northbound vehicle. The northbound vehicle was driven by Vincent P. Lombardo, 46, of Rock Falls. The bicycle and Tedder collided with the Lombardo vehicle. 

Tedder was transported to CGH Medical Center and later air-lifted to St. Anthony’s Hospital, Rockford, where he remains in critical condition. Lombardo was the sole occupant of his vehicle and was not injured. 

No citations have been issued and the accident remains under investigation by the Sterling Police Department and the Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit. 

Sterling Police were assisted by Rock Falls Police Department, Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois State Police, Sterling Fire Department, and CGH EMS.
