Lights Out on U.S. 30 Bridge

Drivers heading across the Mississippi River toward Clinton, Iowa, should expect a darker ride on the U.S. 30 Gateway Bridge. The Illinois Department of Transportation has shut off the bridge’s roadway lighting at night as part of its annual effort to reduce mayfly swarms.

The insects are strongly drawn to bright lights, and when large numbers gather and fall onto the bridge deck, they can create slick, hazardous driving conditions. IDOT says the lights will remain off overnight through September 22. Motorists are urged to slow down, stay alert, and use extra caution during evening and overnight travel.
