Downtown Galesburg’s Simmons Street revitalization is rolling ahead, bringing noticeable changes to the area. Recent improvements include brand-new sidewalks, upgraded storm sewers, and the addition of decorative lighting. The intersection at Prairie Street has reopened, though drivers should watch for temporary stop signs now in place. As the project enters its next stage, sections of Kellogg Street and the downtown parking lot will temporarily close. Officials say these closures are necessary to keep progress on track. The entire revitalization effort is expected to be finished by October of this year, promising a fresher and safer downtown for all.

The $2.5 million project is funded primarily through a Rebuild Illinois grant, supplemented by local funds. City officials express gratitude for residents’ patience during construction, emphasizing the long-term benefits for downtown’s appearance and functionality. Further updates are available on the city’s website.

“We appreciate the patience of citizens while the transformation is underway,” said Aaron Gavin, Director of Public Works. “When completed, the project will be a significant improvement to our downtown, and we are grateful for the Rebuild Illinois Downtown and Main Streets Grant, which made this project possible.”

When the project is completed, improvements on Simmons Street will include:

  • New ADA-compliant sidewalks
  • Curb and gutter upgrades
  • Storm sewer improvements
  • Asphalt resurfacing
  • Landscaping and tree planting
  • Installation of benches and trash receptacles
  • Decorative street lighting

The reconstruction of the adjacent City parking lot will include:

  • Reconstruction of the asphalt surface
  • Curb and gutter upgrades
  • Landscaping
  • A pedestrian canopy
  • Decorative lighting
