Nature lovers across Bureau, LaSalle, Marshall, and Putnam counties will have a unique opportunity next summer as the University of Illinois Extension launches its hybrid Master Naturalist volunteer training. Running from June 2 to July 31, 2026, the eight-week program blends online coursework in ecology, geology, and more with hands-on field experiences at notable regional sites like Starved Rock State Park and the Nachusa Grasslands. Participants deepen their understanding of local ecosystems and engage in stewardship projects to earn certification. Participants will dive into online lessons on local ecology and enjoy guided field trips to natural landmarks. Completion leads to certified volunteer opportunities in conservation and education. Registration is $250, with limited spaces available. Registration closes May 15th or as soon as the class fills. Visit go.illinois.edu/2026MNTraining for details.

Individuals interested in nature and community service can now become Certified Master Naturalist volunteers through Illinois Extension. After completing the required training, volunteers assist with environmental stewardship and educational outreach projects alongside local partners. To maintain their certification, participants must contribute 30 hours of volunteer service and complete 10 hours of continuing education annually. Illinois Extension supports volunteers by providing ongoing learning opportunities and regular meetups. Those seeking more information or who need accommodations to participate can reach out to Emily Hansen by email at [email protected] or call 815-433-0707. Early accommodation requests are encouraged.
