Corn Sweat is a Weather Term

If the air feels heavy enough to wring out, local corn fields may be partly to blame. Meteorologists say the crop is reaching peak growth, and that means peak “corn sweat.” The scientific term is evapotranspiration, when corn pulls water from the soil and releases moisture through its leaves. Across thousands of acres, that can send millions of gallons of water vapor into the atmosphere.

The added humidity can push heat index values even higher, making already hot days feel sauna-like. Forecasters urge residents to limit strenuous outdoor activity, take breaks, and stay hydrated during the most oppressive afternoon hours.
